Dhaka, Dec 13 (bdnews24.com) – The interim cabinet Wednesday discussed ways to revive talks with political parties to break the deadlock. Updates 2 with more quotes
"The issue of reviving the talks with political parties came up," adviser Shafiqul Haque Chowdhury told reporters when asked what the meeting at the Bangabhaban discussed.
The meeting was held a day after President Iajuddin Ahmed handpicked four advisers to four other advisers walked out on his cabinet protesting his unilateral decision to deploy army.
Shafiq said they would approach old problems with a fresh approach, but did not say what the efforts would be.
"Only 5 percent dispute is unresolved. If it is gone, the rest will be solved," who formerly headed small loan body ASA said in a rather profound statement.
The law and order situation was also discussed, and police and ansar were ordered to swing into a flurry of activities.
The meeting, attended by nine advisers except Fazlul Huq, also discussed the disputed election commissioners, he said without making further comment.
"Give us just three days," for good news, he said.
Shafiq however ruled out the possibility of deferring the January 23 voting date.
"There's no scope to push the election date back. It'll be held in line with the announced schedule," he said after about two-hour meeting.
On troops deployment he said, "Army will sit idle. They won't take part in any operation. If police die, the army will act."
Adviser Dhiraj Kumar Nath later said they discussed the proposals already tabled by the political parties.
"We are not dealing with any new proposal from any political party. We are dealing with the old proposals," Nath told reporters.
On whether there would be a new advisers' committee since the previous committee to hold talks with the political parties broke up with the resignation of the four, Nath said the cabinet did not decide on that.
"We'll collectively try to end the deadlock," Nath said.
