Post subject: CJ's intervention sparks court vandalism Reply with quote

Dhaka, Nov 30 (bdnews24.com) – Angry lawyers tied with the 14-party alliance Thursday vandalised the office of Chief Justice Syed JR Mudassir Hosain after he suspended a court ruling on writ appeals against President Iajuddin Ahmed.

Lawyers described the chief justice's prompt intervention in court proceedings as unprecedented. "That's the reason lawyers got angry," a lawyer said.

bdnews24.com legal affairs correspondent Amit Talukder reported from the scene the pro-petition lawyers set ablaze the waiting car of former state minister Barrister Shahjahan Omar at the Supreme Court.

Supporters of 14-party alliance coordinator Abdul Jalil, one of the petitioners, shouted slogans in a procession on the road just outside the court building.

The lawyers also slammed the door and broke windowpanes of the chief justice's office.

bdnews24.com correspondent Khaled Muhiuddin saw broken flower vases scattered all over the floor of the courtroom.

Shaken judges shut themselves in their offices as violence spread beyond the courtroom. Police tightened security in and around the apex court as bickering lawyers were gearing up for street protests.

Some lawyers told bdnews24.com they saw the outraged lawyers chase former law minister Barrister Moudud Ahmed out of the court building amid slogans.

The incident, which was described as unprecedented by senior lawyers and journalists, came after Attorney General AJ Mohammad Ali appealed to the chief justice to suspend the ruling on the writ appeals.

The attorney general initially appealed to the bench of Justice Awlad Ali and Justice Moinul Hossain Chowdhury to have the appeals heard by a bench of three judges.

But Justice Ali and Justice Chowdhury did not decide on the appeal for a larger bench immediately, prompting the attorney general to seek intervention from the chief justice.

The chief justice's office sent a letter to the bench of Justice Ali and Justice Chowdhury asking them to suspend the ruling on writ appeals until the appeal for a larger bench is settled.

Dr Kamal Hossain, the counsel for the 14-party that filed the writ petitions, told the court that a larger bench was unnecessary before the ruling was handed down.

The lawyers claimed Moudud Ahmed made an offensive gesture, which suggested he succeeded to get the chief justice intervening in the legal battle over Iajuddin.

The lawyers shouted "Catch the thief" and "There he goes" as Moudud moved closer to his friends to shield himself from probable attacks, witnesses said.

The attorney general cowered in a corner of the courtroom, they said.

After the ruling was halted, Barrister Rokanuddin Mahmud, vice-chairman of Bangladesh Bar Council, told court that the chief justice stepped beyond his jurisdiction.
