Post subject: Election on January 23 Reply with quote

Dhaka, Dec 7 (bdnews24.com) – The Election Commission Thursday shifted elections two days to January 23 in a sign of easing political turmoil.

The deadline for submitting nomination papers was set for December 21, the commission said in a statement.

The date for scrutiny of the nomination papers is December 22. The main election office fixed December 28 to withdraw nominations. The electoral roll will be upgraded until December 15.

The shift in the poll schedule came after rounds of hectic talks between advisers and bickering political leaders.

The Election Commission on November 27 announced a rushed poll schedule and set the elections for January 21, plunging Bangladesh into fierce street protests by the Awami League and its smaller allies.

Election Commission Secretary Abdur Rashid Sarkar said the poll schedule was altered after consultation with all political parties.

He hoped the fresh announcement will bury "all misunderstandings" and that all parties would take part in the parliamentary polls, he told reporters at a press briefing at his office at 5:00pm.

The 14-party alliance demanded that authorities delay the polls, update a disputed voter list and reform the Election Commission.

Thousands of protesters blocked traffic in Dhaka to pressure authorities for more changes.

The demonstrators took to the streets despite efforts by the interim government to resolve a political standoff threatening the elections.

Also Thursday, four advisers of the interim government met leaders of the alliance that has organised the protests in a bid to end the impasse.

"We are discussing the electoral reforms and we will meet again," alliance spokesman Abdul Jalil said after a meeting at a state guesthouse Padma.

Later, the same advisers sat with leaders of the four-party coalition headed by former prime minister Khaleda Zia.

"We have discussed all disputed issues with both camps," the interim government spokesman Mahbubul Alam told reporters.

"Both parties have agreed on some issues. We want all parties to join the election race to advance the democracy," he said.
