Dhaka, Dec 07 (bdnews24.com)- The man who once called BNP a "party of illiterate people" that "patronised" Islamic militants was at Hawa Bhaban Thursday seeking party nomination.
Abu Hena, MP for Rajshahi-3 during 1996-2006, was sacked for naming and shaming BNP ministers when allegations raged that they were backing militants in Baghmara, his hometown.
It was only Nov 24 2005 when Hena, a former civil servant, was shown the door by the party chairperson Khaleda Zia.
As he was preparing for the parliamentary board interview Thursday to face the leader he vehemently criticised, Hena told bdnews24.com that the former prime minister herself persuaded him to return to the party fold.
The former MP also denied having ever joined the Liberal Democratic Party, a party floated late October by rebel BNP leaders.
In an exclusive interview with bdnews24.com Thursday, Abu Hena alleged that the LDP sponsors included his name in its press release without his consent.
"I have neither joined the LDP nor resigned from the BNP. As Khaleda Zia has withdrawn the expulsion order, I have returned to the BNP since people of my constituency want me very much (to be with BNP)," Abu Hena said.
On October 26, at the launch of the LDP at a Dhaka restaurant, party leaders handed to journalists Abu Hena's letter of resignation from the BNP.
"We spent Tk 45,000 to get his resignation letter signed by him as Hena was in Thailand when the LDP was being floated," LDP presidium Member Syed Monzur Hossain told bdnews24.com.
On November 24 last year as well as the following day, Abu Hena in consecutive interviews with this correspondent said: "There is no democracy in the BNP and this is a party of the illiterate. This government is the patroniser of the Islamic militants. Minister Aminul Haq and Deputy Minister Ruhul Quddus Talukder Dulu are the godfathers who nurtured Bangla Bhai.
"I will never return to the BNP".
Hena's statements were published in different newspapers including the Daily Jugantor on November 26.
"I don't remember whether I ever said I would never come back to the BNP," he said.
Pointing fingers at the two former ministers, he had also said the so-called Islamic militancy was created by the Jamaat-e-Islami, a key ally in the four-party coalition government.
Hena had to flee his home in Eskaton, Dhaka, and find a room in Sonargaon Hotel. At one stage, he left Bangladesh.
Hena returned Sunday after a year spent mostly in the US and Thailand.
"Since Khaleda Zia had taken action against the militants like Bangla Bhai, I decided to return to the BNP."
Hena claimed he was not acting under any pressure.
