Post subject: Khaleda alliance widens into five-party
Dhaka, Dec 9 (bdnews24.com) – Khaleda Zia's alliance Saturday broadened into a five-party fold after a splinter of Bangladesh Krishak-Sramik-Janata League led by Fazlur Rahman joined the four-party alliance.
The BNP chairperson came down heavily on her political rivals and compared the Awami League to a trade union without "political characteristics".
The former prime minister alleged the AL conspired to thwart the parliamentary elections, as "the party knows it cannot win the elections".
"The elections must be held in 90 days," Khaleda said at a function where the faction of Krishak-Sramik-Janata League joined the BNP-Jamaat alliance.
She blamed the AL for creating a constitutional crisis in the name of a movement to defer the elections that she said would never be allowed.
Khaleda welcomed the new party and said: "The four-party alliance turned into a five-party alliance."
Khaleda said the economy and law and order had deteriorated during the rule of the Awami League and the four-party alliance reversed the situation.
"We boosted the economy and made a radical change to education. But they (AL) are trying to destroy the country," she said.
Fazlur Rahman said: "Politics in Bangladesh is clubby politics. You (Khaleda Zia) are the best of captains of the two clubs."
