Government is run by highly qualified people. Still we could not able to run the country properly. We earned reputation as a corrupt country in the world. Country is run by the jewel products of major Universities of Bangladesh. We always blame political party/colonial system/bureaucratic attitude etc. We could not see the real face. All controlling of power, policy makers, Judges, ministers, politicians, and administrators are products of our educational institution. If you do not change education system product would not change. Education does not mean only to read and write but create conscious, apply common sense, able to do critical thinking, modest, self-respect, able to justify reason. Lack of these qualification you can not say person is truly educated. Our formal educational institution fails to produce quality production. We are so-call educated people could not see the face of ourselves but criticize other. In early childhood school teach us respect elder & teachers. Do not argue etc. We learn to respect senior/boss and lost our self-respect, conscious, common sense, critical thinking. At our adult life we could not stand against what wrongs or rights. We can not condemn our misconducts because lack of quality education, that boost up conscious, self-respect, common sense and justification.
I provided some example of personal experience.
Gen Osmany’s dead body placed in front of Parliament building to pay respect. I got privilege as family relative to enter in restricted area and mingled with authority. Coffin box was place in front of terrace but not opened. People started gathering in front of building to see the dead body. I asked Musla bhai (cousin brother of Osmany) to open box so people could see the dead body. He told me he requested many time but they (Bangladesh Army were in charge) refused to open for security ground. He told me that I should try with them again. Shahi bhai informed coffin box was nicely made with glass in front face. He came from London with dead body. A military general who was there overall in charge, he is very nice person. I requested him to open box so people could see his face. His instant reply was we did not open sir’s box (Referring Gen Zia’s body) people would not mind. I simultaneously answer back two were not the same one was normal death at hospital. Finally they allowed public to see face of dead body.
I do not remember exact year and time (In 1978 or 1979 Dec.), there was an arrangement to display Mokthi Jodhu related documents and souvenirs in exhibition at Segunbagicha, Dhaka. Initiators requested to my brother who has some valuable documents. My brother asked me to help with those documents to display in exhibition. So I was involved with the exhibition. I went there with documents & souvenirs. I was given a big nice table to display my items. Before opening ceremony of exhibition some officials/Management people checking display items and asked me to take off of some items from the display table. (News paper pictures clip oath ceremony of Bangladesh Governments, Tajuddin and other AL leaders). I urged these were Mokthi Jodhu related historical event what is problem? One of them told me we do not want to display any political pictures. I lost faith on them about their effort. Initiators were so-called intellectuals. But they failed to draw line between historical truth and politic.
There was book opening ceremony held in Atomic Energy Commission Auditorium. Chief Guest was Vice President Justice Sattar. Book was written by Deputy Prime Minister Barrister Moudud Ahmed. Intellectuals among university teachers, journalists, bureaucrats, professionals were attended in the opening ceremony. Intellectuals were participated on book review discussion and carefully presented their lectures. But one bureaucrat the then secretary of ERD uttered Bangabandu, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, father of nation. Suddenly whole audience was puzzled. Gatherings were not ready to hear such words. (It was too early to mention Bangabandu, father of nation after 1975 killing.)
My first job, I started work directly under my senior friend. (This friend actually brought me into a job) He is very pious honest energetic young man. He is very bright smart guy. Our job mainly maintains relationship between government officials and foreign principals and trade commission of foreign principal. We are agent of foreign company. My friend is very good at negotiation in business deals. Once I asked him, you are religious & pious person but you make people dishonest. Don’t you feel guilty? He firmly believes he is not doing anything wrong. His argument was when you are making money you share with other? They are happy you are happy. What is problem? But principles of honesty definition are very different. Later he quitted all type of businesses and devotes his time in religious activities.
Now I provide some incidence here in USA reflect their personality.
We had business in Branford, Connecticut, white populated area. A mid-aged lady used to visit us. She is doing small home base business. She becomes friendly with us. One day my partner was gossiping with her. She is tried and could not handle her business properly too much work due to increase business. My partner suggested hiring people. She then says too much expenses involve paying taxes etc. As sub-continentals mind he proposes pay in cash. Lady was shock. She could not imagine cheat Government. It is crime, god will punish her.
An old man sitting in front of restaurant saw teenage girl parking car in parking lot. That particular place is designated for disable parking only. He warned the teenage girl if you do not disable parking permit do not park your car, otherwise I would call police. Girl did not care old man’s warning, she parked car and left for shopping. I was watching curiously, old man gets up from chair slowly walked to car check for permit then call for police. Old man told me she violated parking law and has to report authority.
New York State controller publicly denounces for his misconducts and asked for forgiveness. Reason was Controller’s wife used official transport with a chauffeur for personal use. After finding the matters, controller pays the actual cost plus penalty to state over $260,000.00. He publicly apologized for his wife’s misconduct. He is responsible for mismanagement of public trust. Public forgave him and elected again in November 2006 election, but legal dept. took him to court and he pleaded guilty and submit resignation from the post as pre-deal to void imprisonment.
Look at our highly qualified personalities who run our government. Do we show quality of education reflect in daily activities that consist of conscious, self-respect, common sense, justification, critical thinking and modesty and moral value?
