Surging food prices have escalated general price inflation to 7.30 per cent in October from 6.89 per cent in September, A number of civil servants who participated in the controversial ‘Uttara meeting’ met the new cabinet secretary on his first of day office on Thursday.
A group of officers led by Abdul Bari, a joint secretary and former deputy commissioner of Dhaka, met Ali Imam Majumder who became the cabinet secretary on Wednesday.
Abdus Sabur, joint secretary of the Cabinet Division, and AKM Jahangir, director-general of the disaster management bureau, who allegedly attended the secret meeting at Uttara along with others on November 24, were also present.
They demanded that the cabinet secretary take departmental action against Ibrahim Hossain Khan for assaulting Lutfar Rahman, a senior assistant secretary of the establishment ministry, after the promotion of a large number of officers.
Ali Imam Majumder told reporters that the Uttara meeting was now under investigation.
When asked whether the recent moves by the bureaucrats are an indication of political divisions in the bureaucracy, the new cabinet secretary replied in the negative, saying, ‘It is not true that there is any unrest in the civil service. I do not believe that the administration is divided politically.’
‘I will be neutral in discharging my responsibility,’ he asserted when asked about his role in the upcoming elections.
About the gazette notification forcing the former cabinet secretary Abu Solaiman Chowhdury to go into forced retirement, the new cabinet secretary said, ‘He has opted for voluntary retirement.’
When journalists approached him, Abdul Bari hurriedly left the place, saying, ‘It was just a courtesy visit.’
A high-powered body led by agriculture secretary M Abdul Aziz has been investigating the secret meeting at the office of the energy adviser to the last BNP-led alliance government, Mahmudur Rahman, which was attended by about thirty retired and serving bureaucrats. The incident sparked off many unsavoury speculations in politicians and bureaucrats as well.
The committee, which was supposed to submit its report by December 3, has been given 15 more days to complete investigation of the political connections of civil servants in the tenure of the Awami League government also.
A number of cadre officials led by Ibrahim Hossain Khan, a senior assistant secretary who is already facing departmental proceedings, assaulted Lutfar Rahman, senior assistant secretary of discipline section-5 of the establishment secretary on Tuesday for being deprived of promotions, causing fresh unrest in bureaucracy after the Uttara incident. Lutfar Rahman has lodged a case with Shahbagh thana against Ibrahim.
